Chewing coca leaves is a centuries-old tradition amongst Andean labourers, as the stimulants (including a small amount of cocaine) enable them to work harder and longer. The coca leaves are gently crushed between the teeth, and kept inside the cheek where the chemicals are absorbed. As the day goes on the wad of leaves inside the mouth gets bigger and bigger, but they never spit them out.

Cavern Light

The spectacular Abismo Anhumas is only accessed by rappelling down a 72m rope. During certain times of the year at midday, the sun travels through the small crack at the surface forming a spectacular light shaft. I took this photograph years ago on a Canon 5Dmk2 while standing on a raft, making a completely noise-free image almost impossible. I would love to return one day.
