In the north-east, flat limestone country with no rivers — all the water runs underground and surfaces in cenotes, which is where the Maya built.

South-west in Chiapas the land rises into pine-covered highlands, cool and misty, where the Spanish churches were taken over and quietly turned into something else. Between the two, Palenque sits at the edge of the jungle with the forest still pressing against it.
