Morocco
The Atlas runs the length of the country and divides it in two. North and west of it: medinas, tanneries, and walled cities that have kept their shape for a thousand years. South and east: stone desert, palm oases along the riverbeds, and eventually the sand.
Erg Chebbi is the edge of the Sahara proper — a hundred and fifty metres of dune standing where the hammada runs out. The light on it in the last half hour is the reason people make the drive.
