The Southern Alps were pushed up along a fault line and are still rising, faster than the weather can wear them down.

On the west side the rain comes off the Tasman and carves fiords — Doubtful and Milford, sheer rock straight into deep water. East of the divide it dries out into tussock country and turquoise glacial lakes, where a small stone church at Tekapo has become the most photographed building in the country.
