Dramatic clouds over snow-dusted mountains, Torres del Paine, Chile

Patagonia

50°57'S 73°24'W  · Granite, ice & wind 12 photographs

Wind is the main fact of the place. It comes off the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, crosses the steppe, and does not stop — it bends the grass permanently, shreds the lenticular cloud over the peaks, and tears the surface off the lakes.

Above all that stand the towers: granite pushed up as molten rock, cooled underground, and then stripped bare by ice. They catch the first light before anything else does, for about four minutes, and glow like they have been lit from inside.
