Peru
The Sacred Valley runs between Cusco and Machu Picchu, following a river through terraced hillsides that have been farmed continuously for six hundred years.
The Inca built along the contours rather than against them, which is why the ruins still look like they belong. Over the eastern ridge the Andes fall away into Amazon lowland — a two-hour flight and a complete change of world.
