Light at the End of the Tunnel
Tunnel Creek, Western Australia
Tunnel Creek travel two kilometres underground, and was the hideout of the 19th Century Aboriginal hero Jandamarra (nicknamed 'Pigeon').
Jandamarra grew up on Lennard River station and was noted for his riding and rifle skills. He worked with the policeman Richardson as a tracker to capture members of his traditional tribe, the Bunuba. One day they captured many senior tribal elders. Eventually Jandamarra's ancestral loyalties won through. He shot his friend Richardson, freed his people, then engaged in guerrilla warfare against the European settlers. Three years later he was shot outside Tunnel Creek by Mingo Mick, another Aboriginal tracker purported to have legendary powers akin to Jandamarra.
